A calzone is an Italian folded pizza that is baked in the oven and frequently referred to as a turnover. In the 18th century, Naples was where it all began. Salami, ham, veggies, mozzarella, ricotta, Parmesan or pecorino cheese, and an egg are typically added to calzones formed from salted bread dough that are baked in an oven. Other elements typically used as pizza toppings can frequently be found in or on various regional varieties of calzones. Even though calzoni and panzerotti are sometimes confused for one another, the phrase typically refers to an oven-baked turnover rather than a fried pastry.
