A calzone is an Italian oven-baked folded pizza, also known as a turnover, that is made with leavened dough. It first appeared in the 18th century in Naples. Calzones are typically made from salted bread dough, baked in an oven, and stuffed with salami, ham, or vegetables, mozzarella, ricotta, Parmesan or pecorino cheese, and an egg. Other ingredients commonly associated with pizza toppings can often be found in regional variations of calzones. The term typically refers to an oven-baked turnover rather than a fried pastry, though calzoni and panzerotti are frequently confused.
