A calzone is an oven-baked folded pizza made with leavened dough in Italy. It was invented in the 18th century in Naples. A typical calzone is made from salted bread dough and baked in an oven before being stuffed with salami, ham, or vegetables, mozzarella, ricotta, Parmesan or pecorino cheese, and an egg. Other ingredients commonly associated with pizza toppings can be found in regional variations of calzones. Although calzoni and panzerotti are frequently confused for each other, the term usually refers to an oven-baked turnover rather than a fried pastry.
